Blogge: Things You Must Know About CakePHP

[2007-07-23 20:09:41]
On the Blogge site, there's a listing of "must knows" that developers should understand about the CakePHP framework when working with it.

CakePHP is a rapid development framework for PHP which uses commonly known design patterns like ActiveRecord, Association Data Mapping, Front Controller and MVC. Our primary goal is to provide a structured framework that enables PHP users at all levels to rapidly develop robust web applications, without any loss to flexibility.

Among those on the list of handy tips for using the framework are things like:

+ Static pages - Adjusting other data sent to the layout
+ Viewing the SQL queries that are running behind the scenes
+ Using bake.php
+ Complex model validation
+Creating a model for a table that doesn't actually exist in the database
+ Inserting multiple rows in succession

Paul Jones' Blog: Solar: From Blog to Docs

[2007-07-23 20:07:43]
Solar fans will be happy to see (as mentioned in the latest post from Paul Jones) that all of the previous (and future) posts he's been making as tutorials on certain parts of the framework have been integrated into the Solar manual.

The translation went pretty quickly, because I wrote the original blog entries using Solar_Markdown_Wiki (which is the markup format for all the class API and manual entries at the Solar website).

Posts adapted so far include the posts covering views and layouts, using HTTP and sending email from Solar.

PHPGeek.com: Using AuthComponent for Access Control in CakePHP

[2007-07-21 05:06:13]
On PHPGeek.com, there's a new post talking about the use of the AuthComponent for CakePHP for access control in your application. It's not a tutorial, but it does follow how the developer came upon the component and why they're using it.

Nearly everything that is built needs at least some level of authentication and authorization before users can be let loose to use it. Unfortunately, not only is there a lot of confusion out there on how to use it, but lots of poorly done, reinvented wheels out there because of it.

He points out the solution he came across via another article from the "Another Cake Baker" blog (lemoncake) show how to use the component for ACL in CakePHP 1.2.

PHPBuilder.com: Review: Rapid PHP 2007

[2007-07-21 05:05:41]
PHPBuilder.com has a review posted today of a piece of PHP development software - RapidPHP 2007:

Of the many editors available for creating (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP pages, several combine a few different yet compatible languages. Some include support and a few manage to make it work seamlessly. RapidPHP 2007 belongs in the latter category.

They walk through the list of features (including a PHP syntax checker) and include a screenshot of the PHP function hints in action. The reviewer also talks about the support for other languages it has - the (X)HTML editor and CSS style sheet editor.

ONLamp.com: Introduction to Flex Using PHP

[2007-07-21 05:05:12]
O'Reilly's ONLamp.com website has posted a new tutorial that merges PHP with another powerful web technology - Flex.

With all the hype (and money) surrounding buzzword terms like Web 2.0 and Rich Internet Applications (RIA), it's easy to wonder, "How can I integrate that into my PHP application?" Certainly, Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) technologies that use JavaScript code are a good option. But you should also have a look at the Adobe Flex framework. With Flex, you can quickly build functional, attractive user interfaces in Adobe Flash that communicate to your PHP web application through XML.

They go through the usual of showing what Flex is and how it flows in a web application. From there, they move into the tutorial portion - installing the Flex Builder software, creating a new project, testing using Flex Builder and the construction of a sample application (store/access a list of subscribers).

Paul Jones' Blog: The Stenhouse CSS Framework and Solar

[2007-07-21 05:04:36]
Paul Jones talks about an aspect of the Solar framework (Solar_App_Bookmarks) and its inclusion in the Stenhouse CSS Framework:

Solar comes with a reference application, Solar_App_Bookmarks. As I outlined in an earlier post about views and layouts in Solar, the bookmarks application is extended from Solar_App_Base. The Base package holds all the layouts, and those layouts are what I want to talk about in this entry. Solar_App_Base comes packaged with the Stenhouse CSS Framework.

Paul briefly introduces the framework and includes example code - an XHTML scaffold, main layout files and some layout partials to show the framework in use.

Philip Olson;s Blog: How the PHP acronym was reborn

[2007-07-21 05:04:00]
Time for a little nostalgia today in this new post from Philip Olson looking back at a brief history of the PHP acronym - where it came from and how it evolved to mean "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor".

While reminiscing what PHP was like back in the early early years, I stumbled upon a little historical nugget from the old website. Do you know what the acronym PHP stands for? Many of us do, or think we do. [...] But how was the definition chosen? For fun, here's a look back at the official vote that determined this new meaning way back in 1998. It might be worth mentioning that Rasmus, the father of PHP, did not vote for the eventual winner.

He also includes a few "notable quotes that could be taken out of context" from Rasmus Lerdorf concerning his opinions on the matter of the acronym's meaning as well as some other brief notes on the history of PHP and its name change.

Richard Davey's Blog: Two interesting new PHP commands

[2007-07-16 09:01:09]
Richard Davey points out two new interesting PHP commands he discovered when looking through the graphics (GD) section of the manual - imagegrabscreen and imagegrabwindow.

Upon further investigation both of these commands can be used to take screen shots of the desktop of your server, or any applications window (such as a web browser). Both commands are listed as being "Windows only" and also possibly only in CVS, but I found both of them are in the 5.2.3 standard release and compile without error.

However at the moment neither appear to actually do anything other than return fully black images
In testing the functionality, though, his only results were black screens and images instead of the expected image results.
