Mike Potter's Blog: Slides for today's e-seminar on Flex and PHP

[2007-07-01 22:16:54]
For those that weren't able to make it to Adobe's webcast for combining Flex and PHP for web developers, the host Mike Potter has posted the slides for your review.

The session is targeted at PHP developers starting out with Flex. I'll show examples of how to connect to a PHP datasource using three different methods - REST web service, JSON and AMFPHP. I'll discuss the advantages and disadvantages to using each of them, and then show you how to extend your in browser application to the desktop using Adobe AIR.

You can find the slides here [pdf]. Also, if you want the full experience of the webcast and not just the slides, you can also sign up for the other session on July 17th.

WorkingSoftware.com.au: Configuring PHP4 and PHP5 to run concurrently on FreeBSD

[2007-06-25 23:56:45]
From Iain Dooley on WorkingSoftware.com.au today, there's a new tutorial covering the installation of PHP4 and PHP5 onto a FreeBSD server.

So, briefly here is my little recipe for getting PHP4 and PHP5 to run concurrently on FreeBSD using Apache 2.2 and mod_proxy.

He points out one method that's been posted to get this all working, but notes that there are a few issues he found with it. That's the point of this post - to rectify and solve those problems to have you on your way to a happily working PHP4/PHP5 installation.

His guide is broken up into the key steps:

+ Compiling with mod_proxy from FreeBSD ports
+ Installing another Apache instance
+ PHP Installation
+ Configuring and running Apache
and a bug, Bug 37770, he came across where the proxy would just stop working

Community News: Zend Framework 1.0.0 RC3 Released

[2007-06-25 23:49:35]
The Zend Framework project has released the next version of their framework brining them closer to the 1.0 stable release - version 1.0.0 RC3. According to the Zend Developer Zone:

This update contains fixes for 75 issues since the RC2 release. Zend Framework has been in the "release candidate" phase since May 28. During this phase, we have been concentrating on documentation and quality improvements, and postponing adding any major new functionality for future releases after 1.0.

In addition to the updates to the framework, they're also making a major overhaul to the documentation and contents of the Framework's website and want to know about any other Zend Framework-based applications out there.

[2007-06-25 23:48:41]
Sebastian Bergmann has posted an update of the status of the PHPUnit project to his blog today including feature additions to PHPUnit 3.1 and ones being added to other branches.

The last weeks have been busy, but now I want to take the time to finally give you an update on the status of PHPUnit. The development of PHPUnit 3.1 is progressing nicely, about the only thing missing is finishing the documentation for all the new features

Among these new features are things like:

+ improvements in mock objects
+ the ability for PHPUnit to write code coverage information to a test database
+ some fun new template methods
+ and mutation testing that's being built on the separate branch

PHP-Coding-Practices.com: Try-Catch Syntax Weirdness

[2007-06-23 10:35:13]
In working with his code recently, Tim Koschuetzki noticed something odd with a block of try/catch code:

I just noticed today, that PHP's try catch blocks require curly braces. Anybody has an idea why it is like that? I have used curly braces by default up until now, so I just stumbled upon this weirdness today.

He includes two examples, one with a curly brace after the catch clause and the other without. This is different than several other control structures (like ifs) that don't require the curly brace when there's only the one line following it.
