ComputerWorld: Esser vindicated by PHP bug project[2007-04-12 01:22:49]
Frank Lopez has tipped us off to a new article over on the ComputerWorld website of an interview by Howard Dahdah with Stefan Esser about the recently passed Month of PHP Bugs project he's just wrapped.
Last month, Stefan Esser, an independent security consultant and a founder of both the Hardened-PHP Project and PHP Security Response Team (which he has since left), launched his Month of PHP Bugs as a way of improving the security of PHP by outing flaws in its source code.
Making himself a target for criticism through this undertaking (the PHP developer community is a spirited bunch), Esser was surprised at the positive feedback he received at the conclusion of the project. He speaks here with Howard Dahdah.
They talk about the outcome of the project, what he (Esser) thinks he's achieved, what kind of feedback he's gotten about it, and what kind of impact this should have on the opinions the use of PHP for businesses and developers all across the community.

Zend Developer Zone: Flash and PHP in On-Line Gaming[2007-04-12 01:18:09]
In thie new post to the Zend Developer Zone, Cal Evans caught up with three guys from the Athlon Sports web team - Bryce Wells (manager), Corey Snyder (lead Flash designer), and Mike McCracken (lead game PHP developer).
Earlier this year I was given the opportunity to visit one of Nashville's hidden gems, Athlon Sports. Athlon Sports is tucked away in a non-descript building near downtown Nashville. Inside is a 40 year old company, well respected in their field that has been, not so quietly, moving into the world of on-line games.
Traditionally, they publish Pre-Season Annual sports magazines. Before your favorite sport's season begins, Athlon probably publishes a magazine on it. These days however, their interactive division publishes their web site along with many private label on-line games.
They talk about topics like why Athlon decided to get into the web, some about the Pepsi Racing Project (and related technology choices), as well as why they went with PHP to "be the P in LAMP" for their Flash based application.

Stubbles Blog: Two New PHP6 Wishlist Items[2007-02-26 04:58:55]
Launching off from this previous post on the Stubbles Blog, two more posts (from two other developers) have been posted on the same subject:
In this new post, Frank Kleine takes things a step further and talks about the same kind of type hinting but for more types - including arrays and objects. Examples of how he'd expect things to work followed.
The other post is from Stephan Schmidt again and varies slightly off into the world of Namespaces to be included in PHP6 along with the use of annotations.
Be sure to check out the comments on each for some more interesting tidbits...

Evolt.org: Working With Fractions In CSS and PHP[2007-02-12 09:05:39]
Evolt.org has an interesting new article posted today about combining CSS and PHP to display fractions correctly on your pages.
Most of us are uncomfortable with using fractions when writing programs. If we encounter a fraction, we will first convert it into a floating point number (with decimals) and proceed from there. Most programming languages would prefer to use 0.5 as opposed to 1/2 because the later might conflict with the syntax of the languages. In this article, I will discuss my attempt to work with fractions in one of the PHP projects that I have done.
They start with the CSS to handle the output before moving into the PHP code. The code given will take in a decimal number and do its best to match it up with a fraction string value out of an array. The result is the echoed out with sup and sub tags to create the correct effect.
